How The Storm Gathered Strength

Team Snow was formed back in 2001 when a group of winter enthusiasts began riding mountain bikes through the summer. The team got involved in the endurance relay events and has since participated in the various events throughout each biking season.

With each passing season Team Snow has increased its involvement and is now dedicated to running the full endurance schedule of events in Southern Ontario. As well Team Snow has grown in total members, making it stronger and putting riders and teams in multiple categories at events.

24 Hours Hot August Nights

Final 24 Hour of the year. With the victory at the Summer Solstice event earlier in the summer we were looking for the sweep of the 6-10 person category. No surprise the weather forecast went from perfect sunny days to rain as the weekend approached, but this was expected given the summer we’ve had so far. Rain started to fall as the start time approached and everyone started to get flash backs of Summer Solstice. Luckily it didn’t last, and although we got some good rain showers through the afternoon the skies cleared as the night approached and we got good weather through to the end.

The race started off well for us with Sam coming through with the leader. That put us in first in our category which we held for the first third of the race. Through the early night we dropped to second and had the third and fourth placed teams’ right on our heels. As the sun rose we were back to first with a 6 minute lead. It was a slim lead that we were able to slowly extend through to the finish for the victory.

Another memorable event by Chico Racing, definitely one of the best courses yet for a 24 Hour event.

The Misfit Empire stepped it up another level. They secured prime real estate for the final stop of the Misfit Psycles Dance Party and World Tour and threw in a challenge for the AWESOME give-away.

There are so many good reasons to do these events, make sure to put next years in your calendars now.

Duke's Summer Epic 8 Hour Relay

Another race, another stormy day. We arrived at Hardwood early and setup our tents within the woods close to the transition area. This was a perfect setup given the forecast of the day. Luckily the thunderstorms stayed south but the rain did come, causing the race to be cut short with a finish time of 5:15, lap done by 6.

The tag team of Patrick and Ray were doing well until a knee injury forced a change of plan. As the downpour hit they decided they had enough for the day and packed in it before they suffered another injury or broken equipment. Sam and Tristan were in a fast and tight battle in one of the largest and toughest categories. In the end they finished in a solid 2nd place. The team competing in the 80-119 category jumped out to a lead on the first lap and never looked back, again moving up one step from the previous year. The ‘team’ in the 160-199 category took a different approach to finishing on the podium. Arriving late, and then two non-arrivals, Chris took to the course and rode lap after lap returning to the camp every couple of hours for new bottles and food. In the end he completed 12 laps and put the ‘team’ on the podium in 3rd place, well done Chris.

Another great event, I think everyone is getting used to riding in the rain. It has been quite the soggy summer.

24 Hours of Summer Solstice

Not much to say about this event other than rain. We've had a lot of it this summer and mother nature didn't hold back on this day. Storms rolled through Albion Hills all day turning the course into a mudfest. With heavy rain through the evening it got so bad sectios of the course were cut out and others were completely unrideable. Bikes were being dragged in with so much mud the wheels wouldn't turn. Around 10pm it was decided the event would end at midnight, the race couldn't go on like this through the night.

Team Snow was in a tight battle all the way through. Holding a podium spot, we slowly chipped away and moved up getting to first around 9:30pm. We were hanging around the timing tent with the other top teams, just waiting to see which mud filled team rider would show up first. We held on through the storm and managed to squeek one extra lap in right before the cutoff, sealing the victory. This was a great cap to a wild event. Team Snow victorious at the 12 Hours of Summer Solstice, North Americas largest twenty four hour event.

Opus Spring Epic 8 Hour Relay

Team Snow riders came out in full force, with a 4 man team in the 80-119 category, and three solo riders, two riding in the Misfit sponsored singlespeed category. Everyone was locked in tight battles, many coming down to the last lap. With only 6 minutes separating 2nd to 6th in the solo male category, Tristan pushed through cramps to finish 4th, missing the podium by a mere minute and a half. Jamie was locked in a battle with Mark Summers, but managed to put a few minutes into him late in the race and got out for an extra lap giving him the victory. The 4 man team pushed on as the best of the rest in their category as the KHS team dominated the category. In the end they finished a solid 2nd, a step up on the podium from last years result. Overall it was a great race to start the relay series.

Paris to Ancaster Spring Classic

A cold and windy day is expected for a classics race, and this day didn't disappoint. The weather didn't stop the masses from coming out, as this is one of the biggest one day races around. Adam, Jamie, Tristan and Sam were all in the front wave ready to go. One kilometer into the race Tristan suffered a flat, unfortunately a common occurence for him at this event. At that point it turned to a race to catch up as he was now behind the first two waves. The other three trekked on, riding the first half of the race close together. In the second half attacks and legs giving up changed the race, and Adam and Jamie pushed through to top 60 finishes, Adam 23rd and Jamie 57th. Well done everyone that took part, results are here.
